Our everyday search and browsing habits are shifting. Large language models (LLMs) don’t just crawl (meaning they automatically scan and read the content of) pages, but they learn from them and generate personalized answers for each user. That raises a big question for the site owners: How can we increase our website’s visibility not just in search engines, but in AI answers? We have to consider not only how search engines see us but also how large language models “understand” us.
The text file “robots.txt” guides search engines on which URLs or directories to avoid crawling. With traditional SEO, we use robots.txt to guide search engines: which pages to crawl, what to index, and what to ignore. AI bots, however, go a step further. They use our content to build an internal understanding of our products, services, and brand.
That’s where llms.txt comes in. It’s an emerging convention that allows us to point AI tools to our most important, canonical resources and provide them with a clearer map of our site.
What Is an llm.txt File?
An llms.txt file is designed for AI crawlers and tools, and usually lives at the root of a site as /llms.txt (or, optionally, in a subpath). It’s meant to point LLMs to canonical documentation, structured exports, sitemaps, and other key resources. It is essentially giving them a clear map for understanding our website.
The llm.txt file is still very new, so there isn’t a single universal format yet, but common practice is based on an emerging spec – a markdown file with sections in a specific order. It starts with a title containing the name of the project or site (the only required section), followed by a blockquote with a short summary. After that, you can add regular markdown content (without extra headings) to explain the project and how to interpret the files you reference. Finally, you can add one or more sections that contain “file lists” where each item includes a link in the form [name](url), optionally followed by :notes about that file.
Here is the mock example of a llm.txt file:
| # Title > Optional description goes here Optional details go here ## Section name – [Link title](https://link_url): Optional link details ## Optional – [Link title](https://link_url) |
We should also remember that an llm.txt file not only gives a guide to the AI crawlers, but also gives consent and cleaner, more legitimate training data for them. It creates more predictable rules for SEO.
Best Practices for an Effective llms.txt File
When you’re putting together an effective llms.txt file, keep a few best practices in mind:
- Write clearly and concisely:
Use straightforward language so AI crawlers (and humans) can easily understand what each section is about. - Add helpful context to your links:
Whenever you reference a resource, include a short, informative description so it’s obvious what the file or page is for. - Avoid vague or overly technical wording:
Do not use unexplained jargon or ambiguous terms that might confuse models parsing your file. - Try it out with real AI tools:
After you create your llms.txt file, plug it into a few language models and ask them common questions about your site. If they struggle to find answers, go back and adjust the file until their responses improve.

Why llms.txt Matters for SEO
Content still matters for SEO, for E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness), and for rich results like product, FAQ, and how-tos. Those fundamentals haven’t gone away.
What has changed is how people search. Users still rely on Google results, but they’re also turning to AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini to research, compare, and make decisions. That’s why AI visibility now sits alongside traditional SEO as a key part of our overall search strategy.
We’re still in a heavy trial-and-error phase with AI and its impact on SEO, and llms.txt is very much part of that experiment. It’s too early to say whether it will become a long-term standard or fade out, but we won’t know without testing it in the real world. For now, there is no harm in treating llms.txt as a low-risk way to influence what future LLMs are allowed to learn from our site and to make sure they start with the content we actually want to represent our brand.
Three ways that llms.txt helps with this are:
- Connecting traditional SEO with AI discovery:
We’ve already spent years building helpful content, organizing site architecture, and refining internal links. llms.txt takes that same strategy and packages it in a way that’s easier for LLMs to consume clear summaries, curated links, and fewer distractions from navigation, ads, or scripts. - Guiding AI to your canonical content:
Instead of letting models guess which page is “most important,” we can explicitly highlight your official docs, core product pages, pricing, policies, and FAQs. That reduces the chances AI pulls from outdated PDFs, random blog posts, or third-party sites. - Reducing hallucinations and outdated info:
When AI tools answer questions about our brand, we want them to quote relevant, accurate information. By surfacing fresh resources, changing logs, and “what’s new” content in your llms.txt, we give models better data to work with. Especially when users ask about features, pricing, or policies that change over time.
The goal isn’t to trick AI. It’s to make sure the version of our brand that lives inside these tools is as close as possible to reality.
Final Thoughts: A Small File With Long-Term Potential
Even though llms.txt files are important, the fundamentals — like great content, strong technical SEO, and well-planned site architecture — are still key.
But as AI assistants become a bigger part of how users discover, compare, and evaluate brands, this small Markdown file gives us a simple way to:
- Curate how AI sees our site
- Highlight your best, most accurate resources
- Reduce confusion and outdated information about our business
If you’re already thinking about AI visibility alongside traditional SEO, llms.txt is a natural next experiment. It’s lightweight, it’s transparent, and it puts a little more control back in your hands in an AI-driven search landscape that’s changing fast.
