Year after year, pickup trucks maintain the top spots in automotive sales in the United States and look positioned to maintain the lead. The leading Ford F-150® alone sold more than 800,000 models last year and has already sold more than 350,000 models in 2026. Whether it’s their commanding presence or utility, we can expect pickup trucks to continue to be a top-selling class. Manufacturers have introduced or plan to launch new engines, models, and options focused on specialized performance, ranging from off-roading to street power to all-electric innovation, and keeping up with these more specific and nuanced changes is essential to stay ahead in the automotive space.
The Current Market
Though they have a solid lead in sales, the tides in the pickup truck space are changing. Full-size, general-purpose pickup trucks have seen steady dominance, but below it, smaller and more specialized pickup trucks have seen significant sales increases. Between 2024 and 2025, the F-150 saw a very slight decline in sales of less than a percent. Another Ford pickup, however, experienced the opposite. The mid-size Ford Ranger sold 20,000 additional models in 2025 than the previous year, a dramatic change of about 38 percent, and off-road-focused pickup trucks in general boasted similar gains, including the Jeep Gladiator and Chevy Colorado.
Beyond the Ford family, other pickup trucks saw impressive increases from 2024 to 2025, including the GMC Hummer EV and Toyota Tacoma. While they sell fewer models than their full-size pickup truck counterparts, the rapid growth of more specialized pickup trucks may be indicative of a trend, and manufacturers have seemingly thought so too. Now more than ever, they are focusing on focused off-road pickup trucks, street performance trucks and engines, and electric powertrains.
The Future Market
Specialized performance options define pickup truck innovations in the 2026 and upcoming 2027 model years. Manufacturers have focused on refining their full-size pickup trucks, offering more variety and introducing new pickup truck variants by either introducing or reintroducing larger, more powerful engines. These include performance-focused engines for both the streets and off-roading.
Beginning with additional options for full-size trucks, the 2027 Chevy Silverado will feature new 5.7L and 6.6L V8 engines, which are set to deliver class-leading power. Alongside these, a 2.7L and a 3.0L diesel engine will offer more variety. Similarly, the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 is also gaining new 5.7L and 6.6L V8 engines, providing heavy-duty power. We also saw the Ram 1500 reintroducing the 5.7L HEMI® V8 in 2026, catering to those who want even more power in a standard pickup truck package.
New & Returning Models
OEMs are providing larger, more powerful engines, and not just for towing. Ram is ready to satisfy the niche for performance street trucks with the all-new 2027 Ram 1500 Rumble Bee. The 2027 Ram 1500 Rumble Bee is designed for thrilling supercharged performance with three unique V8 engines. While capable of towing, this truck brings exhilarating drives first and foremost, providing customers with access to a ready-built muscle truck, formerly a rarity that often required aftermarket modification.
Off-roading innovations follow, with the specialized all-terrain Ram 1500 TRX returning for the 2027 model year. The upcoming 2027 Silverado 1500 ZR2 will also feature the most extensive off-road capabilities for the model yet.
All-Electric Power & New Tech
Ford is also innovating and is introducing an all-electric, mid-size pickup truck. Though it’s expected for the 2028 model year, the new Ford Fathom is built upon the Universal EV Platform, which will also be the base for other vehicles. The Fathom is uniquely situated in the pickup truck space as a practical and accessible electric workhorse. Meanwhile, OEMs are packing more and more technology into their trucks, especially larger displays, such as the 2027 Chevy Silverado, which will feature over 60 inches of digital displays.
