How to Stand Out in the SERPs

Getting your website clicked on and bringing traffic to your site is one of the top priorities. To create content that people can find while also bringing value to your website is an SEO expert’s dream. Having your webpage rank on the first page of Google , being seen over various Google ads, images, and videos as well as competing for keywords with other sites may seem almost impossible.

There are a few ways to optimize your webpages to rank on the first page of Google and stand out in the search engine results pages (SERPs). Here are a few different ways to optimize your webpage to get noticed on the SERPs.

1. Optimized Title Tags & Meta Descriptions

One of the best ways to get users to click on your web page is to have an enticing title tag and meta description. Having an enticing title tag and meta description will catch the user’s eye and encourage them to click on your link to check out the information. Here are a few ways to ensure your title tags and meta descriptions are as appealing as possible:

Title Tag

The title tag should contain the targeted keyword so that it matches what the user is searching for. Since title tags are still a huge Google ranking factor, clear tags help Google understand your page better. Having your targeted keyword in your title tag will help users see that your page is covering something that they are searching for.

Meta Description

The meta description should be a brief description of what your page is about or what the users should expect when going to your web page. The meta description should be different from your title tag and cover different details that you did not include in your title tag. Even though the meta description is not a ranking factor for Google, Google can still highlight words in the meta description that are relevant to the user’s search query.

2. Schema

What is Schema? According to Moz.com, “Schema.org (often called Schema) is a semantic vocabulary of tags (or microdata) that you can add to your HTML to improve the way search engines read and represent your page in SERPs.”

Schema can present itself in multiple ways to help catch a potential user’s eye.
In the example below, you can see multiple instances of schema. The star rating is an example of schema and can help users see how popular the recipe is to others.

There are different types of schema that can be implemented depending on what your page type is, but a helpful tool from Technical SEO will be able to help.

3. Featured Snippet Optimizing

One of the best ways to get noticed on the SERPs is to get a featured snippet. A Featured Snippet is a piece of content that Google feels answers the user’s query in an accurate and condensed version. Featured snippets are shown at the top of SERPs and are taken directly from web pages. There are currently three different types of Featured Snippets:

Text Snippet: A Text Snippet is a piece of text that answers the user’s search query directly. An example of a text snippet is shown below.

Table or List Snippet: A Table or List Snippet is shown when a paragraph doesn’t answer the search query in that form and a table or list would present the data more accurately.

Video Snippet: A Video Snippet is shown when a video answers the search query better than a piece of text or list.

4. Map Pack

The next and probably one of the most important tools for local businesses is the Local Map Pack. A Local Map Pack is a map that shows three different local businesses that match the user’s search query (see how it looks below). To be eligible to be shown in the Local Map Pack, a business needs to create a Google My Business account and make sure the information is complete and accurate.
