A Day in the Life: The Video Production Team at Aronson Advertising

With the proper effects, anything is possible in a video: humans can fly on their own and cars can talk. Creating such magical videos takes diligence and creativity. Thankfully, the team in the video production department at Aronson Advertising Inc. near Chicago possesses both qualities and then some. So what does a day in the video production department look like? If someone sitting at a computer editing video clips came to mind, you’re only partially right. Follow along with several members of the production team’s day to see how every element of the job comes together.

8:30 a.m. – The workday has officially begun. After getting settled and checking emails, Damian, the motion graphics editor, updates several past commercials for a client who decided to extend a current sale. Updating the commercial includes adding and removing text specifying dates, prices, and additional sale details.

9:45 a.m. – A client arrives for filming. While shooting in the green room, Damian gives the talent guidance: making sure everything looks great, their lines are clearly delivered, and timing is right.

10:15 a.m. – Damian thanks the client, sees them out of the office, and begins editing shots. Making changes such as cropping out the green screen, adding the dealership’s image to the background, and replacing the sky brings the commercial to life.

11:00 a.m. – While Damian is editing, Kyle, who is also a motion graphics editor, packs up his car and visits another client’s dealership to film on location. Some of the equipment Kyle takes with him includes a video camera, tripod, boom pole, three-point lighting kit, and light reflector.

1:00 p.m. – Kyle returns just in time to join the team for lunch at Portillo’s.

1:30 p.m. – Back from lunch, Damian and Kyle continue editing projects shot earlier today, making sure they’re pristine for the client and present the dealership in the best possible way.

2:40 p.m. – Kyle sends the commercial’s audio and script to Matt, the audio engineer. Matt creates sound effects and background music, adding a dollop pizzazz.

2:41 p.m. – Damian starts on a new project. To create a commercial for a client, he needs interior and exterior shots of the dealership, but the dealer didn’t provide any. It’s up to Damian to recreate the dealership in Photoshop.

3:35 p.m. – After adding the client’s dealership name, shrubbery, and car cuts, Damian’s masterpiece is complete and added to the commercial. Both Damian and Kyle continue editing projects until the end of the workday.

5:00 p.m. – The team saves their unfinished work, packs up, and heads home after a productive workday.
