Celebrate Mother’s Day This May 14th

Mother’s Day is here once again! Celebrated in over fifty countries around the world, although on different days and in different ways, Mother’s Day in the United States is celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May.

Mother’s Day began in the United States through the efforts of a woman named Anna Jarvis, who wanted to recognize her mother, a nurse and peace advocate in the American Civil War, as well as all mothers, because a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”. With her tireless advocacy, President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day a national holiday in 1914.

Who should you celebrate with?

Mother’s Day exists to celebrate anyone who has had a motherly influence in your life, whether that’s your birth mother, a stepmother, aunt, grandmother, teacher, church member, or other role model.

How can you celebrate Mother’s Day?

The traditional gifts are food, crafts made by the kiddies, and flowers. In fact, Mother’s Day is the second largest gift-giving holiday after Christmas/Hanukah!

Carnations are the most popular flowers given on Mother’s Day. Pink and red carnations are given to living mothers, while a white carnation is purchased for a mother who has passed away. Another gift idea is to create a scrapbook, video, or write a letter containing all your favorite memories together for her to keep.

If you want to treat her to a meal, you can:

  • Bring her breakfast in bed
  • Take her out to a fancy brunch or dinner
  • Enjoy a picnic lunch
  • Make a delicious home-cooked meal (and clean up after!)

One of the best ways to show your mother or mother of your children how much you appreciate everything she does everyday is to take some of it off her hands for the day.

You might:

  • Clean the house from top to bottom
  • Have her car professionally cleaned
  • Weed the garden, and use the spring weather to plant some flowers
  • Treat her to a spa day
